Interns can work with the after-school programs, various youth activities (youth fitness, home school physical education, Teen Singers), the Wellness Center, the business office and the development office.

| Pfeiffer Nature Center |
Pfeiffer Nature Center is dedicated to building an understanding and knowledge of the natural world’s value. The Center is set within an old growth forest, contains six miles of trails and is located in Portville, NY. |
Pfeiffer Nature Center is in need of someone to review and revise their Adopt A Tree elementary educational program currently designed for students in grades K-5. Additionally, there will be general marketing and program opportunities depending on our scheduling.
Duties include:
- Review and assess existing curriculum to determine if/how it correlates with NYS learning standards
- Recommend and implement changes/improvements
- Revise and/or create new activities for 2006
- Suggest, create, and implement new AAT marketing plan
- Possibly other duties related to AAT
- General marketing duties may include:
- Creating program posters, other advertising
- Distributing program posters, other advertising
- Posting program info on area websites, TV stations, etc.
- Program duties may include:
- Assisting with upcoming scheduled groups such as leading a hike, signing people in, setting up displays, etc
Qualifications:
- A background in elementary education and marketing or journalism would be helpful
- Transportation to/from Pfeiffer office and/or properties
- Enjoy working with people—children or adults
- Flexibility with schedule
The Nature Center is seeking a Journey Project intern who will act as a technical and information systems assistant. Duties will include:
- Database Management
- Research appropriate methods of securely and easily transmitting database between SBU and the Nature Center;
- Train Nature Center staff in those methods;
- Learn features, functions, structures and processes of Nature Center database;
- Receive database electronically, and information to be entered into database in hard copy;
- Update and maintain database for data integrity and completeness on a regular and frequent basis;
- Transmit updated database to Nature Center securely; and
- Develop additional needed queries and reports, training Nature Center staff in their use.
- Public Relations
- Identify no-cost/low-cost systems/processes necessary to streamline current cumbersome means of transmitting newsletter articles to editor for initial setup, training Nature Center staff in their use;
- Identify no-cost/low-cost systems/processes necessary to streamline current cumbersome means of preparing and transmitting finished newsletter to printer for production, training Nature Center staff in their use; and
- Make recommendations to decrease the current labor-intensiveness for Nature Center staff relative to the newsletter;
- Marketing
- Develop flyers or similar for regular promoting of Nature Center programs.
- Technological Integrity
- Identify no-cost/low-cost systems/processes for regular backup of electronic files, training Nature Center staff in their use.

**Business Office: assist with accounting, purchasing, inventory, computer entry and general office duties.
**Computer Assistant: work with elementary and high school students in computer labs, clean keyboards, assist lab technician.

| Rehabilitation Center |
Located in Olean, the Rehabilitation Center is a values-based organization that is dedicated to improving the quality of life and maximizing the independence of people with disabilities. |
The Rehab Center has been able to provide internship opportunities to students in a number of different fields. Aside from the obvious opportunities - health and human services, social work, nursing, etc. - there are a number of opportunities within the agency's support services. These have included accounting, public relations and fundraising, information technology, maintenance and many more. |
The Rock Environmental Center

The Rock is a 230-acre private, not-for-profit facility, whose purpose is to develop and promote environmental awareness. There is a 1,200 square foot multi-use building, miles of maintained and informal trails, a manmade pond and streams. There are hundreds of different species of plants and shrubs, a wide variety of animals, all located in six distinct ecosystems.

Potential Internship Projects:
1. Develop and implement an erosion control plan at The Rock. This project would include investigating the problems, developing tentative solutions, coordinating with grant writers to procure funding, and implementing the solutions.
2. Investigate and implement a parking lot expansion at The Rock. This project would include studying the current parking lot, the current and future needs, developing a tentative solution(s), coordinating with grant writers to procure funding, and implementing the solution(s).
3. Tear down and rebuild deck at old cottage.
4. Miscellaneous trail maintenance and drainage projects.
5. Miscellaneous pond improvement projects. |
| Robert H. Jackson Center |
The Robert H. Jackson Center is in Jamestown, NY, approximately 50 miles from Olean and advances Justice Jackson's legacy through education, exhibitry and pursuing the relevance of his ideas for current and future generations. Jackson was a native of Chautauqua County whose career included serving as Attorney General of the United States, Justice of the Supreme Court, and chief American prosecutor before the International Military Tribunal Nuremberg following World War II. He also participated in the 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court decision that desegregated public schools. |
This internship is in conjunction with the History Department at SBU and the Robert H. Jackson Center. The Center is newly opened, offering a student a unique opportunity to work in a growing and important educational center. The internship is a valuable experience for students of any major interested in legal issues, constitutional history, national politics from the 1930s to the 1950s and international affairs. Students will be given the opportunity to work with Jackson’s papers and participate in the organization of a center that has already attracted national figures (such as Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist) and legal scholars. Internship credit is available for this placement through the History Department.
