The Music Connection
|
This program was created through Olean City School District.
Objectives: Provide guitar lessons to a group of six boys at risk of gang activity, runaway behavior and possible PINS placement, and have nothing in common with the traditional school model. To engage at risk youth in a positive activity that would provide them with a sense of belonging, community, and talent/skill.
|
Method: Two adult community volunteer guitar teachers and four volunteer youth guitar teachers will provide one-on-one lessons with the boys meeting one hour a week for 10 weeks.
Reasoning: By providing guitar lessons and a guitar to practice on, we hope that they will engage in something positive in school. We will encourage the middle school boys to follow up by attending the after school program “The History of Rock Music.” As an incentive to complete at least 10 lessons, we would like to give each boy an electric guitar and a small amplifier. |

Olean Historical and PreservationSociety
|
Located within the Bartlett House in the Olean Historic District, the Historical and Preservation society exists as a resource for local history and engages in the general work of preservation. |
An intern can work with the City Historian or intern more generally with the Bartlett House. There are a number of tasks that could be completed – ranging from conducting historical research, doing preservation work, giving tours and helping with office work. This is a good internship for a history major (and can actually qualify for academic credit), but anyone with interest in this work can apply.
