Cattaraugus Community Action Victim Services Division Community Action is located in Salamanca, NY and provides many services to victims of violence. These include a crisis hotline, emergency shelter, individual victim and group counseling, court preparation and accompaniment and violence prevention education

We can accommodate any individuals need and are completely flexible according to each individual.  Trainings are generally only necessary for individuals that would like to work directly with victims.  For example, they can attend only the Domestic Violence training and Orientation if they cannot devote 35 hours to our Rape Crisis Training.  Occasionally we have given specific projects for interns (organizing events, creating research reports, developing initiatives, reviewing programs) in addition to working with victims.

Basic Function:To work directly with all primary and secondary victims rape/sexual assault, family violence, and all other types of crime by educating, establishing personal goals, and advocating through the criminal justice and other helping agencies. Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging The Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging provides or assures the provision of needed services to county residents who are age 60 or older

 

An intern is needed to serve as a “Caregivers of the Elderly Research Assistant.” The task would be to assist the Caregiver Program caseworker in assessing caregivers and reshaping caregiver services to better meet the needs of the aging. The assignment would include radio and television spots set up by the Department’s staff. There could be other internships with this agency that would focus more generally on journalism and mass communication as well as general human services.
Catt. County Residential Center This is a residential juvenile placement facility located in Limestone, NY only 20 minutes from campus.

GED instruction/tutoring:  Several students are preparing to take the GED and they are in need of remediation in Math and Reading. This can be accomplished by one on one or two. Sessions using materials that we can supply.  Also some internet web sites may be utilized with supervision

  Academic Tutoring:   This internship also involves tutoring in High School curriculum, but in reality the students may be functioning at a much lower level in reading/math. Teachers will meet with interns and provide materials and interns are welcome to involve themselves in our school day. An intern may be assigned one student for the semester!

*Many other opportunities can be discussed with facility departments and personnel to diversify the internship during the semester
Cattaraugus County Youth Bureau

The Cattaraugus County Youth Bureau is an official department of County Government that administered funding for youth development and delinquency programs to the various municipalities (cities/villages/towns) as well as programming for Youth Court, Detention Services, Children With Special Needs, Independent Living Skills, Reality Check, EvenStart, AmeriCorps Mentoring and Runaway and Homeless Youth Street Outreach.

An intern with the County Youth Bureau will have the opportunity to shadow the Executive Director and any other of the staff in the performance of their duties, will gain an understanding of the workings of county government and service delivery, will participate in inter-departmental and inter-agency collaborations and will have the opportunity for direct involvement with youth classes, etc.

Center for Resolution and Justice

This agency is a part of Children and Family Services and is funded in part by the New York State Unified Court System

Interns could work with any of the following programs:

3. Victim Offender Conferencing & Mediation

4. Stop Shoplifting School- Anti-Theft

5. Truancy

6. PINS Mediation and Family Communication

7. Anger Management Groups & Peace Circles
Concerned Citizens of Cattaraugus County

Concern Citizens of Cattaraugus County is a local environmental advocacy organization.

Project that an intern could work on include: 1. improvement of the Allegheny River Trail (fundraising and a tree planting program for along Constitution Avenue), 2. Community organizing through electronic media (rationalizing the organization’s email list) and traditional media (formatting and publishing newsletters), research on solid waste (both local NIMBY fights in Angelica, McKean and Cattaraugus County, and state and national policy, and 4. revising and re-designing a new public information pamphlet on the Allegheny River Trail. This is an ideal placement for a student with a pre-law or environmental science interest .

Cornell Cooperative Extension The Cornell Cooperative Extension educational system enables people to improve their lives and communities through partnerships that put experience and research knowledge to work. This internship is still being developed. We expect that there will be a number of internship opportunities in the areas of business, education and science (especially relating to agricultural research).

Dept. of Social Services

Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services is committed to helping residents achieve the highest quality of life possible by providing services which sustain, protect and empower families and individuals. The services include public assistance, food stamps, heating assistance or HEAP, employment and training assistance, support collection, child protective services, child welfare and adoption, and integrated planning for youth programming.

 
Directions in Independent Living Directions is a non-profit civil rights advocacy organization that provides a variety of services to individuals with disabilities and their families. Since Directions provides a complete set of social services to individuals with disabilities, the work of an intern would be based upon the interests of the student as well as the need of the organization. Approximately 50% of the intern’s time however would be devoted to working directly with the clientele of the organization. The rest of the time may be devoted to particular projects as assigned.
